Rarely do collectors have the opportunity to get involved at the beginning of a new art movement, when significant work by new artists is most unaffected and affordable. But that opportunity has arrived in the form of original Digital Art prints. Some collectors are already familiar with the term giclée, which has come to refer to high quality digitally printed reproductions of work created using any number of traditional media. This work is captured and imported into a computer by either scanning or digital photography for the purposes of making multiples. The time has come for a different group of artists to come to the forefront. These artists use the computer and a wide array of digital imaging software in the direct-to-disk creation of original Digital Art imagery. While this work may be printed using the same digital printing systems as giclée reproductions, Digital Art imagery is recognizably unique in that a different set of creative tools, which reside in the computer itself, are used to make the art in the first place.

The use of computers in the creation of art is nothing new. Computer art has been with us now for well over twenty-five years. In fact, the majority of the images flooding our senses each day via a number of different media are created digitally. These new art making tools have revolutionized commercial art, photography, television, music and film and, as such, the term "digital art" can be applied to so many artistic endeavors that this revolution has been virtually transparent. However, as artists who employ digital tools make inroads into the world of Fine Arts it has become time for some serious consideration as to what this art has to offer. A good place to begin to get a handle on this new kind of art making, would be to identify the basic genres of digital art that are currently emerging.

Photo-Manipulation and Collage

Photography, with its own long history as a populist image-making technology, turned mass-media-device, turned Fine Art, is both a model and a material for Digital Art. Digital imaging technology has served photographers well, with 2003 marking the first year that digital cameras outsold traditional film cameras. Beyond standard photographic techniques, digital tools open up a whole world of expanded image manipulation and printing techniques. In particular is the ability to resize, reposition, select, cut, paste, color and blend almost limitless layers of divergent photographic images into seamless and amazing digital Collages. These collages are often fantastic and surreal in their appearance and thereby often draw into question our modern dependency on the photograph to present a picture of truth and reality. Digital Art techniques have freed photography from its own finality. In the hands of a digital artist a photograph is just the beginning, neither real nor unreal.

Natural Media

The Chameleon-like ability of "natural media" software to mimic the appearance of many traditional media, such as chalk, pastel, ink, watercolor, oils and airbrush makes this genre of Digital Art hard to spot, at first. This work is often created totally freehand using a pressure sensitive drawing tablet to transpose linear movements into digital line and variations in stylus pressure to vary this line's thickness, color or texture. Depending on the artist's intent, there can be very little to tell this work apart from any other art medium
that is built up mark upon mark.

The nature of original Digital Art is such that this "original" artwork is created and resides in a place separate from physical material. That is, digital art cannot be presented in physical form without it first being expressed either as a light image on a computer screen or as a print. This "patina" of technology gives Digital Art an entertaining "trick-the-eye" quality and a once-removed appearance that also found expression in the aesthetics of Pop Art. The resulting work has a distinctive fresh quality that one can easily train one's eye to recognize and appreciate.

Algorithmic or Machine Art

Algorithmic patterns and mathematical potentials course through the computer's digital nervous system. Creating visual art out of these patterns is just one way that human beings make these tools work for them. So, in addition to hand drawn or photographic imagery, a digital imaging system can produce art based on its own internal functions.

In the mid-1970's, mathematician Benoit Mandelbrot brought to attention what he called Fractal Geometry. He showed how fractals occur in many different places in both mathematics and elsewhere in nature. With the aid of computer graphics, Mandelbrot who then worked at IBM's Watson Research Center, was able to demonstrate how his mathematical formulas could describe complex natural structures, such as cloud formations, the distribution of leaves and twigs on a tree, the shape of a coastline or the infinitely self iterating forms of a sea shell. To do this he had to develop not only new mathematical ideas, but also he had to develop some of the first computer programs to print graphics.

Fractal imagery is highly seductive and patently beautiful work, which is inherently new to the development of digital imaging. Beyond this distinctive imagery, fractal algorithms direct the behavior of "filters" and other image manipulation sub-programs that digital artists regularly employ to generate special visual effects that are in turn integrated into their artwork. Furthermore, fractal geometry has made it possible for artists to model in virtual three-dimensional space their own photo-realistic landscapes, architecture and environments, which are also part of this genre.

Synthesis or Integrative Art

This final genre is more or less the crown jewel of Digital Art because, by definition, it suggests the computer's ability to combine, in one composition, all of the aforementioned genres. This ability, to integrate divergent input into a common binary language, means that artists now have imaging tools that can manipulate such things as sound, motion, text or light as if these were a common material. Beyond mixing visual genres, the computer's potential to synthesize patterns of light from nearly any form of input and to then integrate and compose this material into interesting work is astounding.

Just as photography and collage can be combined, digitally, with traditional painting techniques and then integrated or further shaped by fractal manipulations into something fresh, the visual styles of art which we have accumulated over the last six hundred years of art making--that is, all the art movements of the past that were identified as fostering unique imagery--these styles can be integrated into one another to make Digital Art. In this respect, Digital Art is the ultimate Mixed Media Art.

What this all means to the collector is that we have new frontiers of art-making to explore and examine. It means that, here at the turn of another century, there is an emerging form of art that comes directly from the technological invention that promises to define the culture of this century. For the interested collector there is a fresh batch of art and artists to research, new things to learn and relevant art to appreciate. To those who are just starting off on this journey, what does digital art look like? For the time being, if the work forces you to wonder whether it is a photograph, a painting or a print--and the answer is "Yes" to all three--then it is probably Digital Art.

Finding Articles…..

Finding Books……

Finding Magazines & Journals…..

Finding Websites…..

To Find Articles:               www.flagler.edu/library/databases.html

  • Articles in journals from general to scholarly/peer-reviewed can be found in many of the library’s databases.  Article searches can be limited in several ways to help you narrow down your search:  choose commands such as full text, most current, most relevant, and scholarly.  In addition, the database ProQuest allows you to ‘set up an alert’, a feature that will send you e-mail announcements of new articles on your search topic. Finally, most of the databases below give you the option to either print as you search or to e-mail the information to yourself.
  • The following databases index articles in the field of ART:
    • Grove Art Online:  This database provides web access to the entire text of The Dictionary of Art (1996, 34 vols.) with ongoing additions of new material and updates to the text, plus extensive image links and all the sophisticated search advantages possible with an online reference resource.  This is a powerful and comprehensive resource rich in content and varied in offerings.
    • Humanities Full TextThis online resource is a Full Text bibliographic database that cites articles from English-language periodicals, plus the full text of selected periodicals. Full-text coverage begins in January 1995.  Subjects covered include:  archaeology, area studies, art, classical studies, communications, dance, film, folklore, gender studies, history, journalism, linguistics, literary & social criticism literature, music, performing arts, philosophy, religion and theology.
    • LexisNexis Academic:  News information related to the art world can be accessed from this powerful database.  Search for current news articles/stories (‘today’) or for information from ‘all dates’ (going back approximately 20 years) by going to the ‘News’ section on the left screen of the database. Choose ‘Art & Sport News’ in the drop-down menu box and begin your search.   International in scope, this offers a feature called ‘kwic’ (keyword in context) that will automatically give the user an abstract of the full story or article.
    • ProQuest:  Thousands of articles in varied academic disciplines are offered in this database.  Begin your search by doing a “Topic Search” which is one of the choices in the toolbar at the top of the database page.  Enter a term or keyword and you will see multiple related topics to choose from. At this point you can narrow down or ‘view’ the documents in each topic.   Full text and scholarly/peer-reviewed articles can easily be found and search results can be arranged either by ‘most current’ or ‘most relevant’.  Use the ‘Setup Alerts’ feature by giving ProQuest your e-mail address; you will be notified when new articles related to your search arrive.
    • xreferplusThis is a most unique database.  It is the only database that offers a visual display of ‘clusters’ of information.  Once you enter your search request you need to choose the ‘Concept Map’ feature to experience up to 200 clusters of results. This is an especially helpful database to use when you want to search for an artist (ex. Picasso), a movement (ex. Cubism), or a type of art (ex. Photography).  While no full text articles are available this  online reference library  provides you with access to approximately two hundred (200) reference books including  encyclopedias, dictionaries, thesauri and books of quotations, and  a range of subject-specific titles including art.

To Find Books:                  www.flagler.edu/library

  • There are two major ways for you to find Books:

1)  Search the Library’s online catalog by doing a search based upon what you are looking for.  Search by author, title, subject or keyword.  Sometimes the best way to search is to do a ‘keyword’ search which will lead you to a variety of  titles that are kept in either the Reference section (first floor) or the Circulating section (second floor).  A recent keyword search on ‘impressionism’ resulted in forty one (41) titles.  http://www.flagler.edu/library/art.html

  • Examples of titles retrieved from the above search include:
    • Impressionism (1990):  ND 547.5.I4I4472 1991
    • Graphic works of the impressionistsManet, Pissaro, Renoir, Cezanne, Sisley (1972): Oversize/Quarto Books/ NE 647.6.I4G713 1972
    • Cezanne and modernism [Electronic resource]:  the poetics of painting (1995) available in netLibrary.

Note that the first two titles are available in the ‘N’ section on the second floor of the library.  The second title (also on the second floor) is found in the middle section on the lower shelves labeled “Quartos/Oversized Books”.  The third title, however, is not located in our Collection and must be accessed electronically by using netLibrary. All you need to do is click the netLibrary link and create a user name and password.  Now you can  ‘read/view’ a book for 4 hours at a time and you can print what you see based upon the copyright concerns of the author or publisher. Note:  if the book on netLibrary is a resource you would like to have us find for you please file an InterLibrary Loan request.

                http://www.flagler.edu/library/materialrequest.html

2)  ‘Browse’  the Reference Collection on the first floor.

Go to the shelves (@ the south end of the library, in the direction of King Street) and locate the books labeled “N”, the Library of Congress (LC) classification for works pertaining to Fine Arts or  if photography is your topic then find the books labeled “TR”. The following reference selections represent a starting place for you & your research. An exception but not to be overlooked is an excellent encyclopedia focused  on creativity research which is found in the psychology area, BF.

General:

The Dictionary of Art                                                 REF N 31.D5 1996

The goal of Editor Jane Turner was “to produce, in 25 million words, an illustrated reference work that provided comprehensive coverage of the history of all the visual arts worldwide, from prehistory to the present”.  An index of 750,000 items and headings are grouped into 12 broad categories.  While biographies  is the largest area covered information on the world’s civilizations and every modern country (recognized by the United Nations) is also presented.  Art pertaining to geographic areas and cities is detailed and historical information from all the continents in the world is covered.  Individual entries on artistic styles, schools, groups and movements are detailed in over 500 articles.  Materials and techniques used by artists (over 600 entries) are highlighted in articles from acrylic painting to lithography and wood.  The 6700 contributors, all experts in the field, combine to produce a ‘Dictionary’ that is truly a work of art.  Take time to examine this magnificent 34-volume reference set.

The Oxford Companion to Western Art    REF N 33.0923 2001

This single-volume reference contains alphabetic content-rich entries focused on painting, sculpture, and the graphic arts. Information is clearly and comprehensively covered and both black & white and colored (often full-page) works complement the definitions offered. Want to learn more about Hungarian art, Carolingian art, or Flemish art? What are the definitions of the terms ‘istoria’ (p. 364), ‘Little Masters’ (p. 423), and ‘pounce’ (p. 594)?  What was the ‘Danube School’ (p. 170), and when did ‘Gothic’ become recognized as ‘Gothic Art’ (pages 302-307)? All this and more including detailed and descriptive entries on artists and movements related to Western Art can be found in this reference work.

Guide to the Literature of Art History 2    REF N 380.M374 2005

Published by the American Library Association this is a bibliography that is both current and extremely detailed.  Check here for information on serials and directories; visual resources; dictionaries and encyclopedias; iconography; architecture; sculpture; painting;  prints; photography; decorative and applied arts; patronage and collecting; and cultural heritage.

~   Contemporary Artists                                                                REF N 6490.C662 2002

This two-volume set contains profiles of approximately 850 ‘of the most significant artists working in the contemporary era’.  Most of the artists included have done the most serious and significant of their work after the year 1960.

2006 Artist’s & Graphic Designer’s Market            REF N 8600.A746 2006

Learn about the ‘business of art’ in this fully updated paperback reference. Find information on how to get clients, copyright basics, art licensing, gallery information, and how to ‘brag about yourself’.  Each section in the book begins with an article full of excellent advice and tips to encourage the reader to become a successful artist.

The  Sculpture Reference Illustrated                               REF NB 1170.W55 2005

Take time to review the wealth of information in this reference solely devoted to the world of sculpture.  Features include over 1800 color images, work form 288 contemporary living sculptors, an easy to read alphabetic listing of sculpture terms;  tools, techniques and materials a sculptor uses;  and a diverse pictorial contemporary volume. The section on “Carving Granite” is especially enlightening for it showcases the work of the College’s art professor, Enzo Torcoletti (p. 193).

The Thames & Hudson Dictionary of Graphic Design and Designers

                                                                                                                REF NC 997.L58 2003

This comprehensive paperback reference book offers information on typographers, journals, movements and styles, organizations and schools, printers and private presses, art directors, technological advances, design studios, graphic illustrators and poster artists.  A special feature is a chronological chart that outlines the relationship between movements, technology and designers.  International graphic design work is also included.

The Design Encyclopedia                        REF NK 1370.B93 2004

Over 700 color images (most are from The Museum of Modern Art) provide a visual component to the detailed entries of this  encyclopedia.  Separate entries  fall into the following categories:  designers and craftspeople; design studios, consortiums, and partnerships; noteworthy manufacturers or editors of products; significant historical periods and styles; and materials.   From the first entry (Aalto, Aino/Finnish architect) to the last (AAiggurat, an Italian design group) there is much to discover and learn about the last 130 years of the world of design.

~ Graphic Artists Guild Handbook:  Pricing & Ethical Guidelines

                                                                   REF NC 1001.6.G726 2001

The 10th edition of this Handbook  is described by Jonathan Combs (National President, Graphic Arts Guild) as ‘the leading resource for people in the business of buying and selling illustration and design’.  It  provides a sheer wealth of information pertinent to both an existing design artist or one who is planning to enter the profession.

~   Encyclopedia o f Creativity:                                                  REF BF 408.E53 1999

This two-volume set covers information written by experts from assorted backgrounds. Definitions and theories of creativity are covered by scholars who have made ‘creativity’ their passion. A sampling of the multitude of topics presented includes the following:

    • Art & Aesthetics
    • Barriers to Creativity & Creative Attitudes
    • Brain & the Creative Act
    • Creative Climate
    • Dreams & Creativity
    • Group Creativity
    • Women & Creativity

~ The Photography Encyclopedia:                   REF TR 9.M39 1999

This book is ‘intended to give the reader a comprehensive overview of the medium (of photography) in a single, illustrated, easy-to-use volume’.  Information on how to find a gallery, how to buy equipment, and how to enter a photography contest is offered.  Biographical entries are included as well as Pulitzer Prize Winners.  There is a wealth of extra information including book reviews, magazines, booksellers, films and a thorough time line o f photography (p. 639) that covers the period from the 5th Century, BC to 1998.   Entries are detailed and photographs that relate to each historical event add a visual component to the text that is both valuable and relevant.

    ~ The Photographer’s Market:                           REF TR 12.P515 2006

Find ‘where and how to sell your photographs from over 1,600 listings for magazines, book publishers, stock agencies, and more’.  Find information on how to submit your work (and charge for it) and learn the correct copyright protection information (p. 28).  A thorough “Resources” section begins on p. 461 and here you will find help on grants, professional organizations, portfolio review events, and web sites.  An excellent glossary, a geographic index, an international index, and a comprehensive subject index (p. 507-611) make this one volume reference book a definite must-see.

    To Find Magazines & Journals:

    1. The library maintains many excellent print magazines and journals for you to use. Browse the Periodicals Shelves (first floor) and take time to look through the collection of titles which are filed in alphabetic order.  There is a complete listing of magazine and journal titles on the outside of each aisle.  Once you find a title you want to read also remember to ‘lift up’ the shelf for back issues.  Finally, behind each current issue is a label indicating the holdings for the magazine.  For example, the label for Modern Painters gives the following information:  “Full Text available 1999-present---search the Full Text Journal database on the Library’s HomePage www.flagler.edu/library and, Microfilm available:  None”.  The following ART publications are available for you to use in the library:

        • American Artist
        • American Craft
        • Art in America
        • ArtForum
        • ArtNews
        • HOW
        • Leonardo (microfilm only)
        • Modern Painters
        • Popular Photography
        • Sculpture
        • Sculpture Review

Another excellent way to find information from magazines & journals online in the databases we offer you is to browse the

Full-Text Journals link on the library’s HomePage.  Choose the first offering “Art, Architecture & Applied Arts” under the ‘Browse e-journals by Subject’ drop-down menu.
          • At this point you will see the following information:

          http://www.flagler.edu/library/art.html

Mr. Bush, Fire Karl Rove

Is Rove guilty? Dunno. Do I care? Not really. What Rove did was not treason as the lunatics over in the head-up-their-asses community are so fond of pontificating. Criminal? Maybe, in that everything-inside-the-beltway-that-some-pencil-neck-finds-offensive-is-illegal way, but not treason or anything even smacking of treason.

Anyway, it's time for Rove to go. Last time I checked we were in a f*cking shooting war and the last thing the Commander-in-Chief needs is a low-life political opportunist in his inner circle. If for no other reason he should go because his actions are creating a political scandal. And it's not like were talking about the Secretary of Defense here, Rove is a pollster and a political strategist for crying-out-loud. So, Bush finds another low-life political opportunist to replace him--but one that knows to keep his mouth shut. Alright, easier said than done but, really, who really gives a rat's ass about Karl-freaking-Rove? I hear Clinton's low-life pollster and political strategist is looking for work these days.

I dunno about the rest of the world, but I for one did not vote for Karl Rove. I voted for George W. Bush. And I didn't vote for him because I was worried about indexing the alternative-minimum-tax to the inflation rate. I voted for Bush because I want a President who will respond to threats against the United States with force and without hesitation. Rove will only prove to be a distraction to the pussies on the Left looking for any excuse to appease our enemies. So, Mr. Bush, fire Karl Rove and then do what we elected you to do: Kick. Some. Terrorist. Ass.
