A WebQuest for Art Appreciation Grades 9-12

Your class has been selected by the education department of the Guggenheim Museum to curate its first show on surrealist painters for the year 2001. The selection process will focus on three artists that were influenced by painters of the last century. Although, there are many important Surrealist painters, your job will be to convince the currator of Modern Art why he or she should choose the three artists you have selected.

Task
You will be working in a group with other students, and each of you will have a specific role in organizing your presentation. You and your group will submit a type-written report persuading the curator to choose your three artists for the first show on surrealist painters.

Process
1. Break into groups of three or four and choose three artists from the list below:
- Rene Magritte
- Romare Bearden
- Sandy Skogland
- Mark Tansey
- Joan Miro
- Max Ernst
- Salvador Dali
- Jane Ensor
2. Divide the following roles in your group:

biographical researcher- responsible for researching biographical information on each artist

cataloguer (2 students)- responsible for finding titles, visuals, and descriptions of works by the various artists

recorder- responsible for collecting the information from the other group members
3. Your final paper should persuade the curator to choose your three artists for the first show on surrealist painters. The paper should be at least five type-written pages, double-spaced, with 12-point font. Your paper should include the following for the three artists you have selected:

Conclusion
Through this assignment, hopefully you have gained knowledge on surrealism and the process of academic research on the Internet. You have learned one of the first steps into curating a show for a museum through research of an artistic movement, namely surrealism.
